CARP AFTER COMBAT 2017
Carp After Combat Social 2017
Back in September 2016 Carp After Combat announced that their annual Angling social would be relocating to the prestigiously renowned Medway Valley Fisheries in Kent and there began many months of hard work for Dave Coates and his committee. Attending shows to chat with our supports, updates on social media, walking many a mile round lakes as well as the normal administration needed to bring the event together.
Finally the day dawned for it all to begin, with over 100 anglers from all over the UK and France came together to support our chosen charity Care After Combat (www.careaftercombat). As part of the normal festivities, we invite along veterans to part take. Giving them the chance to have a few days away from normal everyday life to relax, chat and fishing. Bringing together the veteran they had the opportunity to visit the various trade stands to see rig clinics and gain valuable hints and tips to improve their angling. Many stories were shared over a drink or to from various conflicts and acts of bravery over past the decades.
Jim Davidson (CEO of Care After Combat & angler) was in attendance to provide a laugh or to and catch a fish, which unfortunately wasn’t forthcoming!
Celebrity anglers provided a Q & A session in that main social area allowing anglers to put them on the spot. This was followed up with a huge auction and raffle that was very well supported by a vast array of companies form the world of angling that we are indebted to for their continued support of which without it we would not be able to have such an event. Sunday night saw Jane Henthorn provide the evening’s entertainment with her amazing singing.
This fishing proved hard across the six lakes but with a number of fish caught and even a UK Personal best being broken. Overall Mens winner was Steve Karim with a 30lbs 80z Mirror and the ladies winner went to Emma Pearsall with a 17lbs 8oz Common. The Mal Story Memorial cup (presented to the veteran with the biggest fish) was retained by Micheal O’Dell with a 16lbs 4oz mirror.
A big thank you has to go out the Gary, Kevin and Jackie of the Tackle Box for their donation of 10 sets of Carp rods, Spod rods, landing nets and bivvies’ and also to Danny Fairbrass for the end tackle that will go towards supporting our veterans.
Our mission now is to establish 3 points of contact across the UK to have the carp setups for veterans to have access to that will allow them to use angling as a way of getting away from the worries and stress of normal everyday life. Further future plans will see veterans trained as angling coaches to help bring the angling to more veterans.
Thus far, with donations from the event and donated equipment, we are on target to raise over £29,000.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to everyone that attended the event and to the companies that continue to support us year on year.
We will be holding a northern event at Clearwater fishery in Carnforth (October 20th to 22nd 2017) and our Carp After Combat Christmas Extravaganza at the Orsett Hall hotel on Saturday November 11th: https://goo.gl/XsXdoa
