The CXS+ head torch features a battery lock mechanism, which disengages the battery contacts, apparently prolonging the life of the batteries. It takes three AAA batteries, which are supplied, which is a nice touch.

It has five modes: red low-light, then low, medium, high, and very bright, all controlled by the top-mounted button. You can also alter the beam by simply swiping your hand in front of the torch, thanks to Coleman’s KineSix technology. This is a great feature when you are busy landing a fish, and one which we really like.

Talking of clever features there’s also the REAX light sensor, press the button for four seconds, and the CXS+ will automatically adjust the light level based on the ambient conditions. If you hold something close when rig tying the brightness will decrease and the beam will widen, out in the open, the brightness increases, whilst the beam is narrowed. It’s a bit weird at first, but again, works brilliantly.

All in all, a very clever head torch that is easy to master, has proved to have decent battery life, with the added advantage that you can’t accidentally turn it on in your bag, so when you come to desperately need it, you won’t be left in the dark.
