Carping Mad 3 | Mike ‘Spug’ Redfern

RRP: £30.00 | Online:

When word got out that Spug was releasing his second book, well, on paper his third, but in actual fact, his second, I have to admit, it did put a smile on my face. Having thoroughly enjoyed Carping Mad 1, and the 3-page Carping Mad 2 at the end, it was with a degree of anticipation I waited, thankfully I wasn’t disappointed when I finally got my hands on a copy when the book launched at the Carpin’ On show.

Carping Mad 3 is equally as amusing as its forerunner, however, you get the sense that he’s grown-up, a grown-up Spug, I hear you scoff, well miracles do happen! You’ll be pleased to know that the book is written is in his own unique style and is full of anecdotes that will have you laughing out loud. It covers his very colourful life from 2009 to 2014, the words just seem to flow off the page, even if you’re not a keen reader you will find it easy going, and hard to put down. Fox Mere, Catch 22, Monks Pit, Waveney and Gilhams are just some of the waters he’s fished during this period. There’s never a dull moment, from car crashes to dating disasters, flooded lakes and ladyboys, and not forgetting a whole heap of carp. The book is a great read and will have you chuckling away to yourself.

The statement on the back of the book goes like this: “This book is not suitable for virgins, the under 17s or over 150s, Spug’s mum, the politically correct, or those without a sense of humour.” Which pretty much sums it up. However, on a more poignant note, Spug’s character shines through and his zest for life, friendship and having fun is inspirational, as are a large number of his captures.

The book is 420 pages and hardback. You can get your copy from or Spug’s Ebay shop, but with a limited print run of 1,000 copies, don’t delay.

The printed edition of Carping Mad 1 has been sold out for a number of years now, but the good news is you will find it as an e-book which can be downloaded to any device from
